A collective blending classical North Indian music with modal jazz and hip-hop aesthetics.
Known for their instrumental compositions, the band’s name comes from an Urdu word that roughly translates as ‘whatever / whoever’. Their first release to bring them into the global music spotlight was a stunning 2016 rendition of J Dilla’s Time: The Donut of the Heart. In 2019, leading figure of the UK jazz scene and multi-instrumentalist Tenderlonious, along with Marek ‘Latarnik’ Pędziwiatr, the keyboardist of EABS and Błoto, joined the core trio of Ali Riaz Baqar, Zohaib Hassan Khan, and Kashif Ali Dhani in Lahore, Pakistan, for a series of improvised recordings. This collaboration gave rise to Ragas from Lahore and Nafs at Peace. Following Nafs At Peace, which made The Guardian’s ‘Top 10 Global Albums’ list in 2021, the collective released their second album A Sound Heart last year. The new album marks the beginning of a fresh chapter for Jaubi, both sonically and spiritually. With a core philosophy of creating music that simply sounds good and feels good, Jaubi comes to Salon as part of the 35th Akbank Jazz Festival.
