An unconventional, defiant, and groundbreaking figure, musician, composer, poet, and activist from London’s avant-garde jazz scene.
Known as Alabaster dePlume, Gus Fairbairn spent his youth and the early 2000s immersed in high-dose rock. He traveled the length and breadth of Britain, earning just enough to survive while playing for the pure joy of it and to explore. This period liberated him, shaping an unconventional style with his freely played saxophone. Following the lead of his heart, this phase gave him his musical identity and roadmap: reject form, create freely, and collaborate. The works he produced during this time featured in his first three albums and were later compiled in To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1 (2020). In 2012, Copernicus - The Good Book of No was independently released with a local collective of friends. On his latest self-produced album, Come With Fierce Grace, he collaborated with artists like Falle Nioke and Tom Skinner, embracing a liberating recording process: no rehearsals were made, and when the musicians entered the studio, they relied solely on each other. Alabaster dePlume thrives on the cycle of harmony and chaos, playing music simply to tell, understand, and give meaning to it.
A sound unrushed and free from conventional forms, like the sea's waves gently crashing onto the shore and slowly retreating.
