Yussef Dayes, the energetic, stylish and talented drummer and record producer of the London jazz scene who has brought a brand new perspective to modern day jazz.
Dayes is one of the cornerstones of today’s London jazz scene that has brought a new perspective to the genre with boundless productivity together with names such as Nubya Garcia, Kamaal Williams, Mansur Brown, Yazmin Lacey and Moses Boyd. A prominent figure of this modern day jazz renaissance movement, Dayes was self-educated with the hundreds of jazz records his father, a bassist in New York during the 70s, brought home. However, his real beginnings were with the lessons he took from Miles David’s legendary drummer Billy Cobham at age 10. He became closely acquainted with various music genres including jazz-funk of the 70s, electronic music, hip hop, grime, jungle, ethnic music and house. This effect is apparent on his distinguishable virtuoso musicianship. Dayes recorded the 2016 Yussef Kamaal album ‘Black Focus’ with Kamaal Williams. ‘Black Focus’ has been regarded as one of the most influential jazz albums of the last 10 years and has earned the duo the ‘Breakthrough Act’ Jazz FM Award. Dayes has worked with Royal Academy graduate guitarist Mansur Brown, and Sun Ra Arkestra patented pianist Charlie Stacey. He received standing ovations at Abbey Road, one of the temples of music history, for the jaw-dropping performance of ‘Love is the Message’ recorded with Alfa Mist, Mansur Brown and Rocco Palladino. He has produced the music for Louis Vuitton’s fashion show at the Paris Fashion Week in collaboration with the famous BBC Radio 1 DJ Benji B and iconic fashion designer Virgil Abloh.
An astonishingly beautiful night awaits the audience with the virtuoso drummer of the new London jazz scene who sees the drums as a means of self-expression and communication, and has been aptly described by The Independent as ‘Dayes is rhythm’.
This event has an age restriction of 18.
