A psychedelic rock project by Brian J. Gitkin, self-described as an international funk cowboy, and known to us as a groove professor.
Born in Brooklyn, Gitkin stepped into his professional music career as the founder and guitarist of the funk band The Pimps of Joytime. The band’s success saw him take on additional roles as a studio musician and producer, wearing multiple hats in the process. He took on production and sound engineering for for a wide circle of artists including New Orleans funk legend Cyril Neville, James Andrews of the New Birth Brass Band, Mississippi blues musician Cedric Burnside, DJ and producer Nickodemus, iconic drummer Bernard Purdie, and many more. As his musical command and creative horizons expanded beyond the boundaries of The Pimps of Joytime, he gave life to Gitkin – a project built on a far deeper reverb world, merging elements of funk, jazz and global music, and creating a more expansive sonic landscape. He released his first album as Gitkin, 5 Star Motel, in 2018. The album’s tracks ‘Grand Street Feast’ and ‘Tail Chaser’ racked up millions of plays, becoming go-to songs for followers of psychedelic music. In 2022, the insistence of his growing fanbase to see him live became impossible to resist. He formed his trio with Palestinian musician Simon Moushabeck on keyboard, accordion and percussion; and Cuban-American Washington Duke on drums, cutting the ribbon on tours spanning from the US to Europe. His latest album Golden Age arrived in 2024. The track ‘The One’, described by Brian J. as ‘a marriage of West African sound, Sudanese synth trance washed in Black Sabbath, and 2000s hipster disco,’ became an audience favourite in live performances. This iconic live performance now arrives on the Salon stage.
Fans of Hermanos Gutiérrez and Khruangbin will feel as though they’ve stepped onto the set of a Quentin Tarantino film.
