A Syrian-born oud virtuoso, composer and performer who transfers the memory of the Eastern Mediterranean into the present through oud strings.
Born in Syria into an Armenian family, Haig Yazdjian has lived and worked, since 1980, in Greece, where he discovered the oud’s ability to express both the enchanting elements of Eastern music and his own musical journey. He sees tradition not as a relic of the past but a living collective memory. He first attracted attention with his debut album Talar (1996). With his second album Garin and its single “Gift”, he began to carve his name in the contemporary music scene of Greece. He composed the music for the theatre production The Beast on the Moon. With his third album Yeraz, he moved towards a more dreamlike and introspective world. His fourth album Amalur (2007) further expanded his boundaries as a universal citizen. He searched for new sounds and incorporated the electric oud into his sonic palette. He collaborated with musicians from different geographies, recorded with Eleftheria Arvanitaki and performed alongside Ara Dinkjian. He contributed on oud to the recordings of Loreena McKennitt’s album An Ancient Muse and joined the Canadian artist on her world tour. He performed in Eleni Vitali’s orchestra. Over the years, he has left his mark across a wide musical landscape, from Nikos Xydakis to Omar Faruk Tekbilek, and from Maria Farantouri to Glen Velez. Since 2023, he has continued to serve as a faculty member at Spain’s concert and workshop programme, Encuentro de Raiz. He continues to pursue his improvisational practice and his passion for Eastern Mediterranean sounds.
