A quintet pushing the boundaries of instrumental soul and funk, drawing inspiration from 1970s film scores and the foundational samples of hip-hop.
Surprise Chef consists of Lachlan Stuckey on guitar, Jethro Curtin on keyboards, Carl Lindeberg on bass, Andrew Congues on drums, and newest member Hudson Whitlock. The five-piece band built a loyal fanbase with their first two albums, All News Is Good News and Daylight Savings. Hailing from Australia, where the funk/soul scene is almost non-existent, they started from home studios in Melbourne suburbs and gained listeners worldwide. Reflecting on those early days, Stuckey says it was ‘one of the first times we realised you could make fresh, new soul music that wasn’t super retro or just nostalgic.’ Their music, described by the band as ‘moody shades of instrumental jazz-funk,’ features striking drums, memorable keyboards, and flute solos. After releasing Education & Recreation in 2022 and touring extensively, filling venues across the US, Europe, and Australia, Surprise Chef continued their relentless musical journey in May with the album Superb. ‘A humble monument to the most crucial principle of our band: that the love we share for one another is, at all times, the most important thing,’ in their own words, the album is now followed by another world tour that fuels a new wave of curiosity.
A performance chasing the unexpected with synth effects, unusual percussion, surprising rhythms, and guitar touches.
