+1 Weekend: Dry Cleaning after Pitohui

+1 Weekend: Dry Cleaning after Pitohui

A post-punk, indie band formed by three friends from South London after a karaoke party.

They started off instrumentally, often getting together to improvise. Six months later, Florence Shaw, a visual artist, university lecturer and photography researcher, started dropping by the band’s studio rehearsals, accompanying the instruments by reading extracts from Michael Bernard Loggins’ book, Fears Of Your Life. Despite having no musical experience, Shaw quickly became the frontperson of the band with her stream of thought-like lyrics. Bringing together Nick Buxton on drums, Tom Dowse on guitar and Lewis Maynard on bass, Dry Cleaning recorded their 10-track debut album New Long Leg at Rockfield Studios in the Welsh countryside with John Parish, who is known for his productions for PJ Harvey and Aldous Harding. ‘A new long leg could be an expensive present or a growth or a table repair,’ Shaw says, indicating that she searches for meaning on an existential level.

Pitohui’s multi-layered music with electronic twists will greet you before Dry Cleaning.

A talkative vocal accompanying restless instruments. Amateur in spirit, mastery level in instrument command.
